COUPLE’S WEDDING STORY:
How and when did you meet?
We met in March of 2016 on Hinge of all places. Ken went to Cal and had lived in the bay area for almost ten years but never in the city. I went to Stanford for undergrad and after a couple years on the east coast had decided to move back to San Francisco. We were both new to living in San Francisco and were looking to go on dates. We connected on Hinge through some mutual friends, it turns out we were both friends with the Nelson Family. After a bad pick up line, we started to inquire how we both knew this family. As it turns out, Ken had grown up with the 4 kids and I had gone to Stanford with them. One was my next door neighbor in my freshman dorm and the youngest sister was my little in my sorority. Of course at this point we had both already back channeled to them and had gotten the thumbs up.
We decided to go on our first date on March 11th, 2016. As it turns out, we only lived a few blocks from each other so we picked a spot in our neighborhood. After a successful first day we actually ended up planning our second date… The next night. From there we were pretty much inseparable.
A few months later we were making plans for a summer weekend, I was going to my cousins bachelorette and Ken was going to a car show down in Pebble Beach. We were both trying to sort out our plans one night when as Ken went to send an email about that weekend that I noticed he was emailing MY UNCLE. Turns out this “guy” Ken kept mentioning that his dad was friends with who he had stayed with was actually my uncle. Made even funnier was when we realized my dad and his dad has actually met years ago at one of the car shows and they remembered joking about the Stanford/Cal rivalry.
Long story short, we are incredibly grateful for technology helping us to meet when our lives were already so closely intertwined and we had no idea!
How and when did you get engaged?
We got engaged December 2018. We are really big on traditions and particularly forming our own traditions, so every year we celebrate our own Christmas before leaving town to be with family. We have our own Christmas tree that we cut down, stockings that we stuff and little meaningful presents that we open and enjoy just the two of us. I had insisted that we go for a walk after we finished dinner and before we opened presents. We walked over to get some frozen yogurt and then walked to Alamo Square park to enjoy the view of the Painted Ladies. We had spent a lot of time in that park since we started dating. It was right near my old apartment, a few blocks from our first date and it overlooked City Hall where we had had our second date. After a long trip down memory lane, I finally dropped down to one knee and popped the question. We decided to keep the news a secret that night so we could enjoy just the two of us. Then the following day we celebrated with my grandparents before heading up to Seattle to be with her family for the holidays.
How did you know the dress was the one?
I really tried to not stress myself out about “the one” because at the end of the day, I knew there were probably lots of dresses I might like if I kept looking. I knew I wanted a high neck dress and I loved the simplicity of the rest of it. Honestly, I also loved that I felt like I could dance in it. Some of the dresses were so restrictive and I knew we were going to have a good dance party at our wedding.
Any anecdotes from the dress-shopping experience?
My mom and grandma flew into town to go dress shopping with me. I was really nervous and definitely felt the pressure at first that I needed to find THE DRESS because they were in town. We made a bunch of appointments but I actually got my dress at the very first place I went to! The experience was over so fast that it actually made my mom nervous and second guess whether or not I was excited. Because we had all weekend to shop but were done Saturday morning, my mom and grandma bought some champagne and flower in my color and insisted we have a little party at my apartment, try the dress back on and celebrate.
